Location

Casalena is one of nine 200 year old stone houses in the small Etruscan hamlet of Cantalena in the mountains behind Cortona. The hamlet of Cantalena has a unique history. A thriving village from the 1800's, the families lived off the land, surviving on chestnuts, live stock, wild animals and timber cutting. By the 1950's this subsistence living was no longer sustainable and the residents migrated to larger towns leaving the village abandoned.

In 1991, the entire hamlet was bought by three gentlemen. As a heritage listed village, they were given a grant and the services of architectural students on work experience, to help restore the village to it's original authentic condition.

The historic city of Cortona is located 12 kilometres away. Set on a hill overlooking the fertile plains of Tuscany it is perfectly positioned between Arezzo in Tuscany and Perugia, the capital of Umbria.

Cortona is considered one of the most beautiful and noble of the ancient cities of Tuscany, along with Siena, Florence and San Gimignano and is renowned for its architecture, art treasures, summer music festivals, weekly markets, elegant shops and great restaurants.
