Il Mulinaccio

Il Mulinaccio is a 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom villa that also offers additional accommodation in the form of a double bedroom apartment. The villa is available for rental with/without the option of the additional apartment.

Both the main house and the apartment have far reaching views towards the Castle of Meleto and the hilltop medieval village of Vertine. Il Mulinaccio is in a great base for sightseeing around the Chianti Hills. In addition the attractions of Florence and Siena, Arezzo, Pisa, San Gimignano, Montalcino and Montepulciano, are all within a drive of an hour or so.

Main House

Living areas

Il Mulinaccio had its beginnings as a watchtower to warn the nearby castles of hostile movements in the valley. Later it was acquired by the Ricasoli family who converted it to a mill, utilising water from the stream and serving the needs of local farmers. The Ricasoli crest is still fixed into the main front facade of the house.

The main front entry to the villa opens from a terrace facing the apartments and overlooking the gardens and leads into the living room. This is the most comfortable room in the house. With its large open fireplace and easy lounges it lends itself to long evenings enjoying the local Chianti wines and peccorino cheese.

Kitchen and dining

A second entrance is through a set of traditional wooden doors, which open directly into the large kitchen which adjoins the living room. At Il Mulinaccio the kitchen is everything you could ask for - plenty of room for food preparation on thick, Carrara marble bench tops, plenty of room for pots and pans and all the kitchen paraphernalia, plenty of room for keeping food and wine and, most importantly, plenty of room for sitting round the table.

The fully fitted kitchen has wooden units with a built in oven and separate hobs, a large freestanding fridge with freezer section and a dishwasher. There is a built in glass and crockery cupboard set into the wall on one side, and a dining table and chairs sit in front of a wooden dresser at one end of the room. The kitchen is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and glassware as well as normal appliances like toaster, kettle and blender. It includes quality pots and pans for those who wish to cook seriously.

To the left hand side of the living room is a doorway into the Dining Room with a dining table that seats up to 16.

The dining room also gives access to the staircase that leads to the upstairs bedrooms.

Bedrooms

The main house offers five double bedrooms. With a mixture of bedding options (doubles with extra singles if required), some rooms can be turned into family bedrooms.

All bedrooms are bright and spacious with lots of light and privacy. Some offer views and 3 of the bedrooms have their own ensuite bathrooms, while the remaining 2 bedrooms access family bathrooms on the same level.

Leonardo apartment

The original barn of Il Mulinaccio has been converted into two separate self-contained one-bedroom apartments, one of which is available to rent with the main house. The Leonardo apartment offers living, dining and kitchen with one bedroom and bathroom.

Located in the grounds of the Villa close to the main house the apartment is ideal for members of families or groups travelling together who would like to have some privacy or space of their own.

Outside the apartment building is a paved area where there is an outdoor setting for al fresco dining.

Gardens and Pool

Il Mulinaccio is situated in 5 acres of park like grounds. There are beautiful established trees and shrubs as well as maintained lawns, a swimming pool and a practical kitchen garden. There are outside areas for sitting or eating. A swiftly flowing stream runs through the property on its way to joining the Arbia river, flowing to the Mediterranean. The stream is part of a trout breeding program for the Province of Siena so our trout are protected. The pool at Il Mulinaccio is larger than normal at 14x7 meters and sits in an elevated, landscaped position, which is separated from the house by the stream and is accessed by a wooden bridge.

The pool area is very private with the main buildings screened by shrubs, trees and poplars. Comfortable lounges invite you to spend hours soaking up the Tuscan sun while the crystal clear water ensures you refresh as often as the mood takes you.

The paved area surrounding the pool is furnished with loungers, sun umbrellas, tables and chairs. There is a covered al fresco dining area and a gas BBQ and bar fridge so you can enjoy refreshment without having to return to the villa.

There is a shower at the pool.

Location

Il Mulinaccio is located between Radda in Chianti (7km) and Gaiole in Chianti (3km) on the SP2 road, 1.5km from the junction with the SS408 road from Montevarchi to Siena. The property is on a tar road, which those familiar with unpaved access will appreciate.

Markets

Most towns hold regular markets with traveling vendors who take over the town square or centre. Generally, they are open in the morning and will finish around 1pm. Most have clothing and fresh food - fruit and vegetables, fish, cheeses, salamis etc. They are very traditional in Tuscany and, as they are supported by locals, usually represent good value.

Some towns have antique, bric a brac and collectors markets - these are held on weekends. The most famous is in Arezzo.

Distances:

Florence 1 hour, Siena 30 minutes, Castellina in Chianti 30 minutes, Greve in Chianti 30 minutes, Radda in Chianti 6 minutes, Gaiole in Chianti 3 minutes. Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Lucca and Pisa are all within an hour - hour and a half of Il Mulinaccio.
